When Patrick Watson started his first wine and liquor store Carroll Gardens in Brooklyn, New York, in 2004,
he felt that his store – with its team of sommeliers and selection of wines that you might find at a three- or
four- star restaurant – was on the cusp of something new.

“We are at the beginning of a trend, the changing face of liquor stores,” Watson said.

Through offering selections a cut above your average liquor store, Watson soon found his business taking
off with the opening of the first Stinky Bklyn, a combination package store and artisanal cheese shop,
providing the residents of Brooklyn craft beers, high-class cheeses, crackers, charcuterie and gifts. Stinky
Bklyn was soon followed by the establishment of Brooklyn Wine Exchange in 2009 (sold in 2014) and Back
Label Wine Merchants in 2014, along with a second Stinky Bklyn location in Manhattan.
